What does an Academic Score give you?
Do I need a degree to get an Academic Score?
No. The nature of a numerical system like Academic Score means that it's not confined to the completion of a degree. It is calculated on all university academic achievement, before, after, and regardless of degree requirements being met. However, Academic Score is not a qualification like a degree. It is simply a score based on how well you did in your university papers, in the same way as an IQ score is based on how well you did in an IQ test. Your IQ score, as a measure of your intelligence, is of great interest to an employer, just as your Academic Score is, but neither can be called a qualification as such.
Academic Score doesn't cost you anything. It's a free online service designed to add value and meaning to your academic achievement at university level.
How do I get my Academic Score?

When you calculate your Academic Score, your Academic Grade Score, and Academic Subject Score are also calculated.

What are Academic Grade Scores and Academic Subject Scores?
Academic Grade Scores and Academic Subject Scores are calculated when an Academic Score is calculated. They are important interpretive tools for use with an Academic Score.
The Academic Grade Score is your Academic Score divided by the number of papers you have completed. If you have a high Academic Grade Score it signifies that you've achieved consistently high grades over all your papers. If you've achieved at the highest level academically you'll hold a high Academic Score and a high Academic Grade Score. An Academic Grade Score can be used as an important interpretative tool by employers (see info for employers) and is different from the traditional Grade Point Average or GPA because it is calculated over any number of papers and not confined to completing specific degree requirements. Academic Grade Score is not a finite scale as GPA is, you can always improve it. It also takes account of the increased difficulty in achieving high grades at higher levels.
The Academic Subject Score is your Academic Score in only one discipline. This rewards specialized academic achievement.
The Academic Subject Score is useful, for example, where you need to achieve academically in only one discipline for a specific occupational role. With Academic Subject Score you can study at 100, 200, 300, and 400 level in only one discipline, achieve highly, and gain the Academic Subject Score you require for the role in question.
How is an Academic Score calculated?
An Academic Score is a numerical value given to your academic achievement. It is calculated on the grade achieved (C - A+) and the level at which the paper is taught (100, 200, 300 and 400). As you will see from the chart below, the higher your grades and the higher the level at which they were attained, the higher your Academic Score will be. Double points are given to two trimesters (full year) as opposed to one trimester papers.
The relative difference in scores between grades and levels, increases at higher levels of achievement. This reflects the increased difficulty of achieving and the smaller number of students who achieve at these higher levels.

Academic Score has been developed in response to a variety of needs that were not previously being met.
Academic Score allows anyone to quickly and effectively ascertain your level of academic achievement, and allows this achievement to be compared across disciplines and universities. Academic Score makes this possible from the time you pass your first university paper. All academic achievement is recognised by Academic Score, at all undergraduate and honours levels and across all disciplines.
Research shows that employers and the public in general find it difficult to ascertain the value of degrees and other tertiary study. They say that when you tell them that you have a degree it conveys very little about your actual level of academic achievement. For example, are you a straight "A" student or is your degree made up of "C's"? Academic Score remedies this problem.
Your Academic Score reflects all your academic achievements. It ensures that your academic efforts will be recognised; whether you complete a prescribed degree course, do not finish a prescribed degree course, choose to take a course prescribed by another New Zealand university or whether you continue studying and thus achieve more papers than a prescribed degree course.
With Academic Score you have more freedom to study what you feel is important and can feel safe that your achievements will be recognized.
Employers are now able to simply and effectively compare different individuals' academic achievements. They are also able to hand pick individuals who have excelled in the specific areas they require by using the Academic Subject Score (see info for employers).
